1. 【big-ticket】高額な
例）I made a big-ticket purchase.（私は高額なモノを1点買いした）

2. 【down to the wire】仕上げにかかって
例）We're getting down to the wire. （作業は最終局面を迎えている）

今日は上の2つを取り上げました。機会があれば使ってみて、自分のものにしてみましょう。

1つ目の表現は、チケットのなかでも大きな（＝高額な）チケット、というところからこのような意味になったのでしょうか。



小林智香子さんは、野中柊『ヨモギ・アイス』と藤野千夜『おしゃべり会談』を英訳された翻訳家。その際に出くわした翻訳の難しさについて、小林さんは次のように述べています（『Asahi Weekly』2006年10月29日号、p. 12）。

One of the story characters eats “Peyang sauce yakisoba” (ぺヤングソース焼きそば). Japanese can immediately grasp the certain nuance these words have, but it might be difficult for native English speakers to understand. “I always considered whether it is worth explaining in sentences at a risk of cutting the flow of a composition or just leave it as it is and ask the reader to grasp the situation.”
 
小難しい言い方をすれば「翻訳不可能性」についての文章ですが、小林さんの英訳時の苦労が伝わってくる文章です。ぜひ読んでみてください。
